A great portrait session begins long before you step in front of the camera.
Your photographer will guide you through the lighting, posing and expressions, but a little preparation beforehand can help you feel more relaxed and confident—and create portraits that feel more like you.
If you’re planning a personal branding session, professional headshots, a family portrait or a fine-art portrait experience, here are a few simple ways to prepare.
1. Know what you want from your session
Before your shoot, take a moment to think about what you want your portraits to communicate.
Are you looking for something polished and professional? Natural and relaxed? Elegant and timeless? Perhaps you want to capture a particular stage of life or create artwork for your home.
You don’t need to arrive with a list of poses. Instead, share your ideas, inspiration and expectations with your photographer. A few reference images can also help communicate the mood or style you have in mind.
The more your photographer understands about what matters to you, the better they can tailor the session to you.
2. Choose your outfits with intention
What you wear can have a significant impact on the overall feel of your portraits.
Choose clothing that makes you feel comfortable and confident while reflecting your personality. Simple, timeless pieces often photograph beautifully and keep the focus on you.
Solid colours, subtle textures and classic silhouettes are generally great choices. If you’re bringing more than one outfit, consider choosing different styles or tones so your final images have variety.
And don’t forget the little details. Make sure your clothes are clean, pressed and ready to go before the day of your session.
3. Take care of the details—but don’t overdo it
Hair, makeup and grooming can help you feel polished and camera-ready.
If you’re having your hair cut or coloured, it’s usually best to do so several days before the session rather than experimenting with a completely new look on the day.
For makeup, think about the overall style of your portraits. A professional makeup artist can create a camera-friendly look while still keeping you looking like yourself.
The same applies to grooming. Nails, facial hair, brows and other small details are worth considering beforehand.
Most importantly, avoid making drastic changes simply because you think you need to look “perfect” for the camera. Your portraits should still feel like you.
4. Get a good night’s rest
You don’t need to completely change your routine before a portrait session, but getting enough rest can make a noticeable difference.
Try to have a relaxed evening and get a good night’s sleep before your shoot. Arriving tired or rushed can make it harder to settle into the session.
Stay hydrated, eat normally and give yourself enough time to get ready. You want to arrive feeling comfortable, not like you’ve been racing against the clock.
5. Give yourself plenty of time
One of the easiest ways to create unnecessary stress before a photoshoot is to arrive late.
Allow extra time for traffic, parking, getting ready and simply settling into the studio. Arriving a little early gives you the opportunity to take a breath, have a chat with your photographer and ease into the experience.
You don’t need to walk through the door already knowing how to pose. That’s part of what your photographer is there for.
6. Talk to your photographer
This may be the most important part of preparing for your session.
Tell your photographer if there are particular images you love, expressions you naturally make, angles you prefer—or anything that makes you feel uncomfortable in front of the camera.
You can also talk about what you don’t want. Honest communication helps your photographer understand how to make you feel comfortable and confident.
A portrait session is a collaboration. The photographer brings the experience, lighting and direction; you bring your personality and story.
7. Don’t worry about knowing how to pose
You don’t need to practise your poses in front of a mirror or arrive knowing exactly what to do.
For many people, being photographed can feel unfamiliar at first. A good photographer will guide you through positioning, movement and expression throughout the session.
Sometimes the most beautiful portraits happen in between the “perfect” poses—a small laugh, a change in expression or a moment when you simply relax.
Trust the process and allow yourself to be present.
8. Most importantly, come as yourself
The best portrait isn’t necessarily the one where everything looks perfect.
It’s the one that feels authentic.
Your portrait should reflect who you are—not a version of yourself that you think you’re supposed to be for the camera. You might be celebrating a milestone, updating your professional image or simply creating beautiful photographs for yourself and your family. Whatever brings you to the studio, give yourself permission to enjoy the experience.
With thoughtful preparation and the right photographer guiding you, you don’t have to worry about being “good” in front of the camera.
You just need to show up.
